SAN FRANCISCO, California — This month, synthetic biology company Yali Bio joined MISTA, the leading food innovation platform. Yali Bio is a venture-backed San Francisco based startup that specializes in creating tailor-made fats through precision fermentation.

Since its formation in 2018, MISTA has strategically curated a member base that includes large ingredient and CPG companies and early-stage startups focusing on novel technologies for a better world. And just this past year, they unveiled an 11,000 square foot facility in San Francisco, complete with state-of-the-art lab equipment, the kitchen of a food scientist’s dreams, and a modular event space for showcasing delicious new food concepts.

Yali Bio immediately engaged with the ecosystem by participating in the MISTA “Cookfest” held last week for MISTA’s member network and strategic partners. Member startups worked with chefs and food scientists from some of the world’s largest ingredient companies to create a tantalizing lunch menu, featuring novel fermermentation-enabled ingredients. Yali Bio debuted a plant-based paté using their novel high-fat flour, generated through precision fermentation. It delivers the rich fatty creamy texture without a duck!

“Alternative proteins have garnered a lot of interest and investment over the last few years, and rightly so,” said Céline Schiff-Deb, Head of Biotech, MISTA. “But people tend to forget that fats and oils are an equally important part of a healthy diet. They deliver energy, essential fatty acids and flavor. Yali Bio is developing concrete solutions to bring novel nutritional and functional fat ingredients to the food system. Yali Bio’s team is composed of veterans of oil production by fermentation, and we are very excited to welcome and support them in the MISTA ecosystem.”

“We’re excited to join MISTA because it will accelerate our food science objectives, and network of CPG foods and ingredients partnership contacts and collaboration in the food tech space.  The leadership team at MISTA brings tremendous food industry knowhow that we are excited about!” says Yulin Lu, the Co-founder & CEO of Yali Bio.
